Chapter 11 - The Girl in the Waiting Room

A year after the 3:07 call, Emma accompanied me to a community safety event.

She had no intention of speaking.

Then she noticed a young woman sitting alone outside the conference room.

The woman was crying.

Emma sat beside her.

They spoke quietly for twenty minutes.

I stayed away.

Later Emma joined me.

“What happened?”

“She thinks nobody will believe her.”

I didn't need more explanation.

“What did you tell her?”

Emma looked toward the woman.

“That I believed her.”

The woman eventually connected with professional advocates and appropriate services.

Emma never learned exactly what happened afterward.

But the encounter changed something.

She began volunteering with a local support organization.

Not as a symbol.

Not as “the woman from the case.”

Just Emma.

She helped organize transportation.

Prepared welcome bags.

Sat beside people in waiting rooms.

Sometimes the most meaningful rescue wasn't dramatic.
