Chapter 4 - The Name Nobody Mentioned

Melissa Grant wasn't missing.

That was the first important fact detectives established.

She was alive.

She had changed her name, moved across the country, and spent eleven years making sure Daniel couldn't find her.

When investigators finally reached her, Melissa initially refused to speak.

Then she heard Emma's name.

She agreed.

Her story was painfully familiar.

Control disguised as love.

Jealousy disguised as protection.

Fear followed by apologies.

Melissa had left Daniel after an especially frightening confrontation during college.

She disappeared because Daniel spent months trying to find her.

“He wasn't looking because he loved me,” Melissa told investigators by video call. “He was looking because I had escaped.”

Daniel's defense attorney immediately attacked the relevance of decade-old relationships.

But prosecutors weren't building a case from old accusations alone.

They had Emma.

Medical documentation.

The cameras.

The emergency call.

Daniel's contradictory statements.

Rachel.

Digital messages.

And now Melissa.

Still, Daniel believed he could win.

He called Emma from jail.

The first attempt was blocked.

The second came through another inmate's account.

Emma answered before realizing who it was.

“Emma.”

She froze.

“Daniel?”

“You've made your point.”

She hung up.

The jail recorded the call.

He tried again.

“You need to fix this.”

Emma handed the phone to investigators.

The calls became evidence.

Then Daniel made an even bigger mistake.

He called his mother.

“Tell Emma to say Claire pressured her.”

Patricia sat in her kitchen listening.

“I won't.”

“Mom.”

“No.”

“You owe me.”

“For what?”

“For being your son.”

Patricia started crying.

“I've spent your entire life cleaning up after you.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said, “Careful.”

Patricia's face changed.

That one word finally broke whatever remained of her denial.

She brought investigators everything.

Old messages.

Financial records.

Family emails.

A college disciplinary letter Daniel had claimed was a misunderstanding.

For years, Patricia had protected her son because she believed protecting him meant loving him.

Now she understood that every consequence she had prevented had merely been transferred to someone else.

Meanwhile, Emma left the hospital.

She didn't return home.

She came with me.

The first night, she slept twelve hours.

The second night, she woke screaming.

The third morning, I found her sitting in my kitchen drinking coffee.

“I want to go back.”

“To Daniel?”

Her eyes widened.

“No. To the house.”

“Why?”

“My things.”

“We can arrange that.”

“And there's something I need.”

We went with two officers.

The house looked different in daylight.

Smaller.

Emma walked upstairs.

She opened her closet and removed a shoebox.

Inside were photographs of us as children.

Birthday cards.

Our grandmother's necklace.

Then she reached behind a stack of sweaters and removed a flash drive.

“What is that?”

“My insurance.”

The drive contained documents Emma had copied from Daniel's computer.

At first, she had thought they were financial records.

Then detectives opened a folder.

Inside were screenshots.

Messages.

Photographs.

Private information about Emma's friends.

Her parents.

Me.

Daniel had been documenting everyone close to her.

There was a folder with my name.

CLAIRE.

Inside were my work schedule, photographs of my car, screenshots of public posts, and notes about when I typically visited Emma.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel hadn't merely isolated Emma.

He had studied the people who might rescue her.

At the bottom was a document titled CONTINGENCIES.

The detective opened it.

Emma gripped my hand.

There were names followed by strategies.

Her mother: emotional pressure.

Her father: financial embarrassment.

Rachel: discredit past instability.

Claire Bennett: conflict of interest.

Beside my name, Daniel had written:

If Claire becomes involved, make her look obsessed and professionally compromised.

I almost laughed.

Because Daniel had prepared for everything.

May you like

Except one thing.

Emma becoming brave enough to stop protecting him.
