Chapter 13 - Daniel's Last Attempt

Nearly two years passed.
Then my work phone received a message.
Daniel was seeking a modification related to post-conviction legal proceedings.
Nothing extraordinary.
But Emma's name was mentioned.
Old fear returned.
She read the notice twice.
“Does he get to drag me back into this forever?”
“No.”
The legal process moved forward without requiring the confrontation she feared.
Daniel's challenge did not magically erase the evidence or the verdict.
Still, the experience reminded Emma of something important.
Freedom wasn't pretending Daniel no longer existed.
Freedom was knowing his existence no longer dictated hers.
She went to work that morning.
Bought coffee.
Called Mom.
Went jogging.
That evening she texted me:
You know what I did today?
What?
Everything I was already planning to do.
May you like
I smiled.
That was victory.
