Chapter 5 - The Perfect Husband Falls Apart

News traveled quickly.

Not because police released details.

Because Daniel's employer placed him on leave.

Neighbors noticed patrol cars.

Friends began asking questions.

For years, Daniel had built his identity around being admired.

Now people were looking at him differently.

And he hated it.

His attorney issued a statement insisting the truth would emerge in court.

Emma refused to respond publicly.

“You don't have to prove yourself to strangers,” I told her.

“I know.”

But she struggled with something deeper.

She missed him.

That surprised her.

“I hate myself for it.”

“Don't.”

“How can I miss someone who hurt me?”

“Because the person you loved and the person who hurt you occupied the same body.”

She stared at her coffee.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“Feelings don't have to.”

Slowly, Emma rebuilt ordinary life.

She chose her own breakfast.

Changed passwords.

Bought a new phone.

Went for a walk without explaining where she was going.

Small freedoms became enormous.

Then one afternoon, an envelope arrived.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph from Emma and Daniel's wedding.

On the back:

REMEMBER WHO YOU PROMISED TO LOVE.

Emma's hands started shaking.

We called investigators.

Security footage from a nearby business eventually showed the person who delivered it.

Not Daniel.

His cousin, Aaron.

Aaron claimed Daniel's mother asked him.

Patricia denied it.

Investigators obtained Aaron's messages.

Daniel had contacted him indirectly through a mutual friend.

Another attempt to reach Emma.

Another violation.

The prosecution requested stricter restrictions.

Daniel's confidence began unraveling.

Then came the preliminary hearing.

It was the first time Emma saw him since the bedroom floor.

Daniel entered wearing a suit.

For one terrible second, he looked exactly like the man she'd married.

He glanced at her.

Emma's hand tightened around mine.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want to leave?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

That mattered.

Not that she wasn't afraid.

That she stayed despite being afraid.

Daniel's attorney argued that Emma's recordings were incomplete and lacked context.

The prosecutor responded with timestamps, medical records, the 3:07 call, and Daniel's shifting explanations.

Then the judge heard the jail recording.

“You've made your point.”

Daniel stared straight ahead.

The courtroom became silent.

The judge strengthened the no-contact order.

Outside, reporters waited.

Emma kept walking.

Then a woman called her name.

“Emma!”

I turned.

A young woman stood behind the courthouse barrier.

Maybe twenty-eight.

Red hair.

Tears in her eyes.

“I need to talk to you.”

“Who are you?” I asked.

She looked at Emma.

“My name is Julia.”

Emma didn't recognize her.

Julia swallowed.

“I worked with Daniel.”

Something about her expression made my stomach tighten.

“What do you want?”

“I saw the news.”

She looked around nervously.

“There's something you need to know.”

“About Daniel?”

“Yes.”

Julia wiped her eyes.

“He didn't start doing this when he married you.”

“We know about Rachel and Melissa.”

Julia shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice dropped.

“I mean while he was married to you.”

Emma went completely still.

Julia reached into her purse and removed an old phone.

“There are messages on here.”

“Between you and Daniel?”

“Yes.”

Emma looked devastated.

But Julia wasn't finished.

“He told me you were unstable. He said he was trying to leave you.”

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

Emma's face lost color.

Julia held out the phone.

“And when I tried to end things, he threatened me too.”

The case had just gained another witness.

May you like

But this time, Daniel hadn't hidden her in his past.

He had hidden her inside Emma's marriage.
