Chapter 15 - The Anniversary

On the second anniversary of the call, Emma invited us to dinner.
Mom expected sadness.
Dad brought wine.
I arrived prepared for anything.
Instead, Emma had balloons.
“What are these?”
“Anniversary party.”
Mom blinked.
“For…”
“The night I left.”
We stared at her.
Emma grinned.
“Why should Daniel own this date?”
So we ate.
We laughed.
At 3:07 a.m., none of us were awake.
That was intentional.
Emma slept through the exact minute that once divided her life into before and after.
The next morning, she texted:
Missed 3:07.
May you like
Best sleep ever.
I saved the message.
