THE WATCH ON HER WRIST / Chapter 11 / 19

Chapter 11 - The Money Chloe Never Mentioned

The account held $3.2 million.

Chloe claimed she knew nothing about it.

Claire didn't believe her.

Neither did investigators.

When confronted, Chloe finally admitted the truth.

She had been stealing from Victor while helping him steal from Whitmore Holdings.

Her insurance policy had become a fortune.

"You said you wanted protection," Claire told her.

"I did."

"You wanted money."

"I wanted both."

Claire stared across the interview table.

"Every time I think you've finally told the truth, I discover another lie."

Chloe's eyes filled.

"I was going to give it back."

Claire almost laughed.

"Apparently everyone in this scandal planned to give money back someday."

Chloe lowered her head.

Her cooperation agreement was suddenly in jeopardy.

For Claire, the revelation hurt in a strange way.

She had started to see Chloe as another person trapped by Victor.

That had been partly true.

But victims could also become perpetrators.

People were rarely as simple as innocent or guilty.

Sometimes they were both harmed and harmful.

Claire returned to work.

Months passed.

The criminal cases progressed.

Nathan pleaded guilty to financial crimes and received a sentence that included incarceration and restitution.

Julian also pleaded guilty to charges connected to unauthorized transactions.

He never asked Claire to intervene.

She wouldn't have.

Chloe returned the stolen funds and continued cooperating, but she too faced consequences.

Victor fought every charge.

The company survived.

Barely.

Shareholders were furious.

Clients left.

Three directors resigned.

Financial journalists predicted Whitmore Holdings would be broken apart.

Claire refused to panic.

She sold unnecessary assets.

Cut executive bonuses before touching ordinary salaries.

Opened board meetings to independent compliance observers.

Published investigation findings rather than burying them.

Slowly, trust began returning.

One afternoon, Elena entered Claire's office.

"You need to see this."

Claire looked at the latest employee survey.

For the first time in years, employees reported that they believed misconduct could be reported without retaliation.

Claire smiled.

"That's better than quarterly earnings."

Elena laughed.

"Don't tell investors."

But the rebuilding wasn't complete.

A week later, Claire received a letter from Julian.

Not an email.

Handwritten.

He apologized without excuses.

He didn't ask for reconciliation.

He simply described every moment when he could have told the truth and chose fear instead.

The final line stayed with Claire.

I thought protecting our life meant preventing it from changing. I understand now that every lie was changing it anyway.

Claire folded the letter.

She didn't answer.

Not yet.

That evening she walked through the executive lobby.

The same elevator.

The same marble.

She stopped where Chloe had poured matcha on her dress.

It felt like another lifetime.

A young employee approached.

"Ms. Whitmore?"

"Yes?"

"I just wanted to say thank you."

"For what?"

"My manager retaliated after I reported something. The new ethics office investigated. They actually listened."

Claire smiled.

"That's what it's there for."

As the employee walked away, Claire realized something.

The worst morning of her professional life had exposed everything her company needed to confront.

But it had also given her the chance to rebuild.

Then Maya approached carrying a package.

"No return address."

Claire opened it upstairs.

Inside was the white-gold watch.

Again.

But Chloe was already in custody.

Claire turned it over.

Something was engraved on the back.

A series of numbers.

Maya frowned.

"What are those?"

Claire recognized the format.

May you like

"Bank coordinates."

And suddenly the watch that had started everything was about to reveal one final secret.
