Chapter 8 - Blood Is Not Innocence

Nathan Whitmore arrived at Claire's apartment the following morning smiling.
That smile vanished when she placed the photograph on the table.
"Where did you get this?"
"Dad."
Nathan sat down.
Claire remained standing.
"Tell me."
"It's not what you think."
"Everyone keeps saying that."
Nathan explained that Victor had approached him three years earlier when Nathan's real-estate investments were collapsing.
He needed money.
Victor offered help.
In exchange, Nathan approved transfers from the family trust.
"How much?"
"At first? Two million."
"At first?"
Nathan's eyes dropped.
Claire felt sick.
"How much total?"
"Eleven."
Claire stared at her brother.
"You stole eleven million dollars?"
"I borrowed—"
"Don't."
Nathan fell silent.
"Did Dad discover it?"
"Yes."
"Did he confront you?"
Nathan nodded.
"What happened?"
"He told me to repay everything and resign from every family trust."
"But you didn't."
"Victor wouldn't let me."
"Victor?"
Nathan laughed bitterly.
"Once you're dirty, Claire, people stop asking favors. They start issuing instructions."
The pattern was becoming clear.
Victor didn't recruit partners.
He manufactured prisoners.
Nathan.
Julian.
Perhaps Chloe.
Each compromised once.
Then controlled forever.
"Did you forge my signature?"
"No."
"Who did?"
"I don't know."
"Did you know it was happening?"
Nathan's silence answered.
Claire turned away.
"Get out."
"Claire."
"Get out."
"I'm your brother."
She looked at him.
"Dad warned me you'd say that."
Nathan froze.
Claire showed him the letter.
His face crumpled.
For a moment, she saw the little boy who used to follow her around their childhood home.
Then she remembered thirty-one million dollars.
"Are you going to police?"
Nathan whispered.
"Yes."
"You'll destroy me."
"No."
Claire's voice remained steady.
"You did that yourself."
By afternoon, Nathan had retained an attorney.
By evening, Victor called an emergency board meeting.
His strategy was obvious.
Remove Claire before she could expose him.
At eight the next morning, eleven directors gathered.
Victor spoke first.
"Claire's personal conflicts have compromised her judgment."
He cited Julian.
Chloe.
Nathan.
Her father's trust.
He painted Claire as the center of chaos.
Then he proposed temporary administrative leave.
Claire listened.
When he finished, she stood.
"Before anyone votes, I'd like to show you something."
The doors opened.
Outside forensic counsel entered.
Behind them came federal investigators.
Victor's face changed.
Claire placed copies of the ledger on the table.
"Yesterday evening, I voluntarily delivered our findings to law enforcement."
Nobody moved.
"This company will not bury misconduct to protect its reputation."
She looked directly at Victor.
"And it will not sacrifice innocent employees to protect powerful ones."
Victor stood.
"This is outrageous."
"Sit down."
He stared at her.
Claire's voice remained calm.
"For years, people here were afraid of titles. Today that ends."
Victor walked toward the door.
Two investigators intercepted him.
They did not arrest him.
Not yet.
But the message was unmistakable.
Outside the boardroom, employees gathered as news spread.
Claire returned to her office.
For the first time in days, she allowed herself to breathe.
Then Maya entered.
"Chloe's gone."
Claire turned.
"What?"
"She left the building during the board meeting."
"Security?"
"She used someone else's badge."
"Find her."
Maya hesitated.
"There's something else."
She held up a small envelope.
"Chloe left this on your desk."
Inside was the limited-edition watch.
And a note.

I can prove who forged your signature.
Come alone.
