THE WATCH ON HER WRIST / Chapter 4 / 19

Chapter 4 - Her Name on the Documents

Claire did not plug Elena's flash drive into her laptop.

She had spent too many years around corporate investigations to make that mistake.

Instead, she handed it directly to outside forensic counsel the next morning.

By noon, they confirmed it contained hundreds of documents.

Invoices.

Approvals.

Internal emails.

Payment schedules.

And scanned authorizations bearing Claire Whitmore's signature.

Excellent copies.

Except Claire hadn't signed them.

Her name had been used to approve transactions totaling more than twelve million dollars.

Maya looked horrified.

"Someone was preparing a scapegoat."

Claire stared at the signatures.

"Not someone."

She pointed to the metadata.

Several files had originated from Julian's executive suite.

Others from Chloe's workstation.

Maya lowered her voice.

"Do we confront them?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because twelve million dollars doesn't disappear through one secretary and one executive without touching other people."

Claire leaned back.

"If I confront them now, everyone involved starts deleting evidence."

"So what do we do?"

Claire closed the folder.

"We let them believe I know less than I do."

For the next three days, Claire behaved normally.

She attended strategy meetings.

Reviewed budgets.

Met department heads.

She even allowed Chloe to remain at work.

That decision drove Julian crazy.

Friday afternoon, he entered Claire's office.

"You need to resolve this Chloe situation."

Claire looked up.

"I thought you didn't want me firing her."

"She's distracted."

"Understandably."

"People are gossiping."

"About the matcha?"

"About us."

Claire folded her hands.

"What about us?"

Julian's jaw tightened.

"That we're having marital problems."

"Are we?"

He stared at her.

"We don't need to be."

For one dangerous second, Claire remembered the man she had married.

Julian laughing in a tiny apartment when they had almost no money.

Julian sitting beside her father's hospital bed.

Julian holding her hand at her mother's funeral.

Ten years didn't disappear because of one terrible morning.

That was what made betrayal so complicated.

It didn't erase love.

It poisoned the memory of it.

"Tell me the truth," Claire said.

"I have."

"About Chloe."

"Nothing happened."

"About Northstar."

Julian stopped breathing.

Barely.

But Claire saw it.

"What's Northstar?"

She almost admired him.

Almost.

"A consulting company."

"We use hundreds."

"This one received millions from your division."

"I don't personally review every vendor."

"Your signature is on the authorizations."

"So?"

"So you just told me you don't know the company."

Julian stared at her.

Claire continued.

"Which statement would you like to change?"

His face hardened.

"You've been CEO four days and you're already investigating your husband?"

"I'm investigating company money."

"Same difference."

"No, Julian. That's exactly the difference you never understood."

He walked out.

That night, Claire's home alarm activated at 2:13 a.m.

She woke instantly.

Julian wasn't beside her.

She checked the security application.

Home office.

Motion detected.

Claire walked downstairs quietly.

Light spilled beneath the office door.

She opened it.

Julian stood beside the desk.

Her laptop was open.

He spun around.

"Claire."

"What are you doing?"

"I needed the printer."

"At two in the morning?"

Neither moved.

Then Claire noticed something in his hand.

A flash drive.

Not Elena's.

That was locked elsewhere.

But Julian didn't know that.

"Give it to me."

"It's mine."

"No."

He put it in his pocket.

"You're being paranoid."

"And you're searching my computer."

"I live here."

"That doesn't answer me."

His expression changed.

For the first time, the polished executive disappeared.

"Stop digging."

Claire stared at him.

"What?"

"You heard me."

"Is that a threat?"

"It's advice."

"From my husband?"

"From someone who understands what you're walking into."

Claire stepped closer.

"What am I walking into, Julian?"

He looked exhausted.

"Something bigger than Chloe."

Claire's heartbeat accelerated.

"Then tell me."

He almost did.

She saw it.

Then his phone vibrated.

Julian looked at the screen.

Claire saw the name.

CHLOE.

At 2:17 in the morning.

Julian declined the call.

Claire's voice dropped.

"Answer it."

"No."

"Answer."

The phone rang again.

This time Claire grabbed it first.

She answered.

Chloe spoke before Claire could say anything.

"Julian, we have a problem. She found Elena."

Claire and Julian stared at each other.

May you like

Chloe continued:

"If Claire gets the original ledger, we're finished."
