Chapter 14 - The Man Who Came Back

Julian was released on a gray Tuesday morning.
Claire did not meet him.
She told herself she didn't need to.
Three days later, however, he appeared outside Whitmore Holdings.
Security called upstairs.
"Mr. Whitmore is downstairs."
Claire's heart reacted before her mind did.
"Does he have an appointment?"
"No."
"Tell him I'll give him ten minutes."
When Julian entered, Claire barely recognized him.
He was thinner.
His hair had more gray.
The expensive executive confidence was gone.
He stopped several feet from her desk.
"Hi."
"Hi."
Neither knew what came next.
Finally Julian said, "The building looks different."
"It is."
"I heard what you've done."
Claire nodded.
"I'm proud of you."
She stiffened.
Julian noticed.
"Sorry. That wasn't mine to say."
"Why are you here?"
He handed her a folder.
"Divorce papers."
Claire looked at him.
"I signed."
Her chest tightened unexpectedly.
"You could have mailed them."
"I wanted to tell you something first."
Claire waited.
"I spent years asking you to trust me when I hadn't earned it."
He looked at the floor.
"I'm not asking anymore."
Claire felt tears threatening.
Julian continued.
"I loved you. I still do. But love didn't make what I did less destructive."
Claire whispered, "No."
"I thought if I confessed, I'd lose everything."
He smiled sadly.
"Turns out lying made sure I did."
Claire looked at the papers.
"Where will you go?"
"Colorado. A friend offered me work."
"What kind?"
"Construction estimating."
That surprised her.
"No executive office?"
"I think I've had enough executive offices."
Claire almost smiled.
Julian turned toward the door.
"Goodbye, Claire."
"Julian."
He stopped.
She didn't know what she wanted to say.
So she chose the truth.
"I don't hate you."
His eyes filled.
"That's more kindness than I deserve."
"No. It's not kindness."
Claire breathed.
"It's freedom."
Julian nodded.
Then he left.
Claire signed the divorce papers that afternoon.
She cried afterward.
Then she went home, slept eight uninterrupted hours, and woke feeling lighter than she had in years.
The marriage was over.

But her life wasn't.
It was beginning again.
