THE WATCH ON HER WRIST / Chapter 2 / 19

Chapter 2 - The Announcement He Never Expected

Julian recovered first.

"Claire," he said carefully.

Chloe's fingers tightened around his arm.

Her eyes moved between them.

"You know her?"

Claire watched her husband's face.

Ten years of marriage had taught her his smallest signals. The slight tightening near his mouth when he was calculating. The slower blink when he needed time. The way his shoulders became unnaturally relaxed when he wanted everyone else to believe there was nothing wrong.

He was calculating now.

"Yes," Julian finally said.

Chloe waited.

Claire waited too.

Julian swallowed.

"She's my wife."

Chloe's hand fell from his arm.

The color disappeared from her face.

Nobody spoke.

Claire could practically hear the information traveling through the hallway.

The woman Chloe had humiliated was Julian Whitmore's wife.

Chloe stared at the matcha covering Claire's dress.

"I—I didn't know."

Claire's expression didn't change.

"No. You didn't."

"It was an accident."

"Was it?"

Chloe looked toward Julian.

That was mistake number one.

She wasn't asking Claire to believe her.

She was asking Julian to save her.

Julian stepped forward.

"Claire, perhaps we should go into my office."

"Not yet."

"Please."

Claire looked at Chloe's wrist.

"Where did she get the watch?"

Julian's eyes hardened.

"Not here."

That was mistake number two.

Claire turned toward the employees surrounding them.

Nobody openly stared anymore, but everyone was listening.

Claire understood why Julian wanted privacy.

She also understood something else.

Whatever existed between Julian and Chloe had flourished partly because people were afraid to speak.

Claire wouldn't make that mistake.

"You're right," she said.

Julian visibly relaxed.

Then Claire added, "We have somewhere else to be."

"Where?"

"The boardroom."

Julian stared at her.

"What?"

Claire checked the time.

"Nine twenty-six."

His confusion lasted several seconds.

Then realization began forming.

"No."

Claire said nothing.

"No, Claire."

Chloe looked between them.

"What is happening?"

Claire walked toward the boardroom.

Julian followed.

"Claire, wait."

She didn't.

At precisely 9:30 a.m., Chairman Robert Hale opened the boardroom doors.

Several directors were already seated inside.

Robert smiled when he saw Claire.

"There you are."

Then he noticed her dress.

His expression changed.

"What happened?"

Claire glanced toward Chloe.

"A useful introduction to company culture."

Robert frowned.

Julian looked ill.

Chloe stood motionless outside the room.

Robert stepped aside.

"Everyone, our new CEO has arrived."

The hallway went silent.

Chloe's lips parted.

Claire walked into the boardroom.

Twenty minutes later, the company-wide announcement went live.

CLAIRE WHITMORE APPOINTED CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER.

Employees gathered around screens throughout the building.

Claire sat at the head of the conference table wearing a borrowed blazer over her stained dress.

She should have been thinking about the speech she was about to deliver.

Instead, she thought about one sentence.

President Julian protects her.

Why?

The obvious answer was an affair.

But Claire had learned never to accept the obvious answer until she had examined the numbers.

After the announcement, Robert approached.

"Do you want to tell me what happened?"

"Eventually."

"Do I need security?"

"No."

"Legal?"

"Not yet."

Robert studied her.

"I've known you since you were twenty-four. That 'not yet' worries me."

"It should."

Claire returned to her new office.

Her first official action as CEO wasn't firing Chloe.

That was exactly what everyone expected.

Instead, Claire requested three things.

Security-access logs.

Executive expense reports.

And procurement records for the previous twenty-four months.

Her new chief of staff, Maya Bennett, stared at the request.

"All of them?"

"All."

"May I ask what we're looking for?"

Claire removed the stained blazer.

"I don't know yet."

Maya nodded.

"How quickly?"

"Before anyone realizes we're looking."

That changed Maya's expression.

"Understood."

At noon, Julian entered without knocking.

"You humiliated Chloe."

Claire looked up.

For several seconds she genuinely wondered whether she had heard correctly.

"I humiliated Chloe?"

"That's not what I meant."

"You might want to choose your next sentence carefully."

Julian closed the door.

"The situation was handled badly."

"By whom?"

"Everyone."

Claire leaned back.

"Interesting."

"Claire."

"Did you give her the watch?"

Silence.

"Yes."

There it was.

"Why?"

"She worked on the Geneva negotiations for months. It was a performance gift."

"The watch you told me was for your mother?"

"I bought Mother something else."

"You never mentioned that."

"I forgot."

Claire studied him.

Julian had always been an excellent liar when the lie was prepared.

This one wasn't.

"Are you sleeping with her?"

His face changed.

"No."

The answer came quickly.

Perhaps too quickly.

"Have you ever?"

"No."

"Does she believe you are?"

"Of course not."

"Then why did she tell me she'd 'been with Julian a long time'?"

His eyes flickered.

"She's dramatic."

"Why did she call you Julian in front of employees?"

"She's worked with me seven years."

"Why did you call her sweetheart?"

"Claire, for God's sake."

"Answer."

"It's a habit."

Claire stood.

"A habit?"

"An expression."

"Do you wipe expensive gifts on all your employees' wrists with your handkerchief?"

Julian stared at her.

"You're making this into something it isn't."

Claire walked toward him.

"No, Julian. I'm trying to determine what it is."

He lowered his voice.

"You're CEO now. People will scrutinize everything you do. Firing my secretary on your first day because you're jealous would look terrible."

Claire almost smiled.

There it was.

He wasn't protecting Chloe with affection now.

He was protecting her with strategy.

"I haven't fired anyone."

Julian blinked.

"No?"

"No."

Relief appeared too quickly.

Claire noticed.

That was when she became certain.

Chloe knew something.

Something Julian desperately wanted protected.

After he left, Maya entered carrying a tablet.

"We have a problem."

"What kind?"

"The kind that doesn't look accidental."

She placed the tablet in front of Claire.

A spreadsheet filled the screen.

For eighteen months, executive discretionary expenses had been routed through a consulting company called Northstar Advisory.

Claire frowned.

"I don't recognize them."

"Neither does Procurement."

"Total?"

Maya hesitated.

"Four-point-eight million dollars."

Claire stared at her.

"Authorized by?"

Maya enlarged the signature field.

Julian Whitmore.

Claire's pulse quickened.

Then Maya opened another document.

"The contact person at Northstar is listed as C. Thorne."

Claire slowly looked up.

"Chloe?"

"We don't know."

"Find out."

Maya didn't move.

"There's more."

She opened the security records.

Chloe's badge had accessed Julian's office dozens of times after midnight.

That wasn't necessarily evidence of anything.

Then Claire saw another column.

Restricted finance archive.

Her expression changed.

"Why does an executive secretary have access to Finance?"

"She shouldn't."

Claire stared at the dates.

One occurred while Julian had supposedly been in Geneva buying his mother's watch.

Another occurred while Claire and Julian had been celebrating their tenth anniversary three states away.

Claire felt cold.

"Maya."

"Yes?"

"Freeze the access logs. Quietly. Don't revoke anyone's credentials yet."

Maya nodded.

"And don't tell Julian."

That evening Claire returned home at seven.

Julian wasn't there.

At 8:15, he texted.

Emergency meeting. Don't wait up.

Claire read the message twice.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Nobody spoke.

"Hello?"

Breathing.

Then a woman's whisper.

"Mrs. Whitmore?"

"Yes?"

"You don't know me."

Claire sat straighter.

"Who is this?"

"I work in accounting."

"What's your name?"

"I can't tell you."

"Why?"

A pause.

Then:

"Because Chloe already destroyed the career of the last person who asked questions."

Claire's grip tightened around the phone.

"What questions?"

"About Northstar."

Claire stood.

"What do you know?"

The caller breathed shakily.

"Don't trust the invoices."

"Why?"

"They're fake."

Claire's heart hammered.

"How do you know?"

"Because I created some of them."

Silence.

Claire moved toward the window.

"Who told you to?"

The woman started crying.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I need you to understand something."

"What?"

"This isn't an affair."

Claire stopped.

The caller whispered:

May you like

"It's much worse."

Then the line went dead.
