Chapter 15 - Chloe Returns

Two years after the elevator incident, Claire received an unexpected request.
Chloe wanted to see her.
Her sentence was complete.
Claire nearly refused.
Then curiosity won.
They met in a quiet café.
Chloe looked dramatically different.
No luxury handbag.
No designer watch.
No immaculate armor.
Just jeans, a sweater, and nervous hands wrapped around coffee.
"Thank you for coming."
"You have ten minutes."
Chloe nodded.
"I wanted to apologize."
"You've done that through lawyers."
"I know."
"Then why now?"
"Because those apologies were about reducing my sentence."
Claire appreciated the honesty.
Chloe continued.
"This one isn't."
She described the person she'd been.
Ambitious.
Insecure.
Addicted to proximity to power.
She had mistaken expensive objects for proof of importance.
The watch became the perfect symbol.
"I knew Julian had chosen it with you for his mother," Chloe said. "That's exactly why I wanted it."
Claire remembered.
"I wanted proof that I could take something meant for a Whitmore."
"And pouring the matcha?"
Chloe looked ashamed.
"I saw a woman I thought couldn't hurt me."
Claire leaned forward.
"That's the part you still don't understand."
Chloe looked up.
"You shouldn't need someone to be powerful before deciding they deserve dignity."
Silence.
Chloe nodded slowly.
"You're right."
Claire stood.
"Is that everything?"
"Almost."
Chloe reached into her bag.
Not for the watch.
For a folded photograph.
It showed the executive hallway on that first morning.
Claire stood covered in matcha.
Employees watched.
Chloe was turned away.
"Where did this come from?"
"Security archive."
Claire studied it.
"Why give it to me?"
"Because I used to look at that picture and see the worst day of my life."
Chloe swallowed.
"Now I realize it was probably the day that saved it."
Claire looked at her.
Chloe had lost her career, money, freedom, and reputation.
But perhaps consequences had done something protection never could.
They had forced her to see herself.
Claire placed the photograph in her bag.
"I hope you build something better."
Chloe's eyes filled.
"Do you forgive me?"
Claire paused.
"Forgiveness isn't the same as pretending something didn't happen."
"I know."
"But I don't need to carry anger toward you anymore."
May you like
For Chloe, that was enough.
For Claire, it was too.
