Chapter 7 - The Secret My Father Left Behind

Claire felt as though the room tilted.

"My father?"

Elena nodded.

"The Whitmore Legacy Trust."

Claire knew the trust.

Her father had established it years before his death.

It funded scholarships, employee emergency assistance, and charitable programs.

"It can't be."

Julian finally spoke.

"It can."

Claire turned on him.

"You knew?"

"Not initially."

"Stop using that phrase."

Julian looked ashamed.

"Victor used the trust because it carried your family name. Payments into it looked legitimate."

"Where did the money go afterward?"

"Offshore."

Claire closed her eyes.

Her father's name had been used to wash stolen money.

Then Elena said something unexpected.

"Your father discovered it."

Claire opened her eyes.

"What?"

"Before he died."

"That's impossible."

"I saw an email."

Claire's father had died eighteen months earlier.

Northstar had been formed only months before that.

The dates overlapped.

Elena explained that Charles Whitmore had noticed irregular transfers shortly before his final hospitalization.

He had requested a private audit.

That audit had disappeared.

Claire remembered her father's final weeks.

He had repeatedly asked to see Julian.

She had assumed he wanted to discuss succession.

Now she wondered.

"Did Julian meet him?"

Elena looked at him.

Julian nodded.

Claire's voice trembled.

"What did my father tell you?"

Julian's eyes filled with something she had never seen there before.

Shame.

"He told me Victor was stealing."

"And?"

"He told me to help him prove it."

Claire stared.

"You knew eighteen months ago?"

"I knew he suspected it."

"What did you do?"

Julian looked down.

"Victor came to me first."

The betrayal deepened.

Victor had offered Julian a choice.

Help expose the scheme and risk destroying the company during Charles Whitmore's illness—or temporarily cooperate, supposedly to recover losses through a planned transaction.

Julian chose cooperation.

"Temporary," he whispered.

Claire shook her head.

"Every criminal thinks the first compromise is temporary."

Julian had become trapped.

Once his signature appeared on questionable transfers, Victor owned him.

Then Chloe discovered everything.

And she began building her own leverage.

Claire stood beside the window.

For years, she had thought her marriage was built on shared sacrifice.

Now she realized Julian had spent eighteen months waking beside her while carrying the secret that her dying father had trusted him to expose.

"You betrayed him."

"I know."

"You betrayed me."

"I know."

"And you betrayed the company."

"I know."

There was nothing left to say.

Claire asked him to leave.

Before going, Julian placed a small brass key on the table.

"Your father gave me this."

"What does it open?"

"I never found out."

Claire stared at it.

"Why keep it?"

"Because his last words to me were, 'When Claire is ready, give her the key.'"

Claire's throat tightened.

"Why didn't you?"

"Because I was a coward."

After Julian left, Claire examined the key.

A number was engraved on it.

Maya recognized the format.

Whitmore Holdings' old headquarters had used numbered safe-deposit compartments in its archival vault.

The building still belonged to the company.

At midnight, Claire and Maya entered the abandoned headquarters with security.

Dust covered the lobby.

The old executive floor looked frozen in another decade.

They found the archive vault behind her father's former office.

Compartment 4421 opened with the brass key.

Inside sat a single envelope.

CLAIRE.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

If you're reading this, I was unable to finish what I started.

Claire stopped.

She recognized every curve of her father's handwriting.

The letter explained that Charles had discovered unauthorized transfers.

He suspected Victor.

But he had also discovered something else.

Someone inside the family had helped Victor.

Claire continued reading.

Her father's final paragraph made her knees weak.

Trust evidence, not blood.

The person who betrayed this company will expect you to protect them because they are family.

Don't.

Beneath the letter was a photograph.

Claire turned it over.

Victor stood beside someone outside a private bank.

Not Julian.

Claire stared at the second person.

Her breath disappeared.

May you like

It was her younger brother.

Nathan.
