Chapter 10 - The Boardroom

Twelve directors waited.

Evelyn entered alone.

For the first time since inheriting Fairchild, her control was genuinely threatened.

Director Thomas Reed spoke first.

“You exposed billions in capital to personal conflict.”

“I protected investments approved by this board.”

“You protected your husband.”

“Sometimes both were true.”

That answer created murmurs.

Evelyn did not hide.

She explained every intervention.

Every loan.

Every guarantee.

Some had made Fairchild enormous profits.

Others had carried unnecessary risk.

“I won't pretend my judgment was never affected by my marriage,” she said.

“Then resign,” Reed replied.

Evelyn looked around the table.

“If the board believes that's best for Fairchild, vote.”

They did.

Six to six.

Deadlock.

Then the thirteenth director entered.

Evelyn stared.

Her aunt Margaret Fairchild had not attended a board meeting in four years.

Margaret took her seat.

“I've read everything.”

Reed leaned forward.

“Then you understand.”

“Yes.”

Margaret looked at Evelyn.

“You made mistakes.”

“I did.”

“You hid emotional conflicts.”

“Yes.”

“You also prevented a hostile scheme that could have cost this institution billions.”

Evelyn said nothing.

Margaret cast the deciding vote.

Evelyn remained chairwoman.

But there were conditions.

Stronger conflict rules.

Independent oversight.

No hidden personal interventions.

Evelyn accepted all of them.

When she left the room, Daniel smiled.

“You survived.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked through the glass toward the city.

“Fairchild survived.”

That evening, she received a handwritten envelope.

From Blake.

Inside was not a plea for reconciliation.

It was a letter.

I spent years believing love meant someone standing behind me while I became important. I understand now that love was never supposed to make one person smaller so the other could feel bigger.

Evelyn read the sentence twice.

At the bottom:

I'm not asking you to come back. I'm trying to become someone Sophie can be proud of.

For the first time since the gala, Evelyn cried.

Not because she wanted him back.

Because she finally understood she could let go without hating him.

But one final secret remained.

Daniel called.

“Vanessa's lawyers found another account.”

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

“Vale's?”

“No.”

“Whose?”

May you like

Daniel hesitated.

“Lenette Winslow's.”
