THE WOMAN BEHIND THE EMPIRE / Chapter 2 / 19

Chapter 2 - The Woman Everyone Stood For

Blake forgot to breathe.

Evelyn stood at the ballroom entrance wearing a blush-pink gown that caught the chandelier light with every movement.

Sophie held her hand.

For one irrational second, Blake wondered whether he was looking at someone else.

His wife did not look uncertain.

She did not look embarrassed.

She looked as though the ballroom belonged to her.

“What is she doing here?” he whispered.

Vanessa heard him.

Her fingers tightened around his arm.

Across the room, conversations died one by one.

A banking executive stood.

Then another.

Then the chairman of a national real-estate fund.

Blake recognized Senatorial donors, CEOs, venture-capital partners, philanthropists, and old-money families whose assistants normally refused to return his calls.

They were all looking at Evelyn.

And several were smiling.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Blake... why is everyone staring at her?”

“I don't know.”

That was when Arthur Bennett, chairman of the Atlantic Legacy Foundation, left the stage.

Blake straightened.

He had spent three months trying to secure ten minutes with Bennett.

The man walked directly past him.

Toward Evelyn.

“Madam Chairwoman,” Bennett said warmly.

The room seemed to tilt.

“We've been waiting for you.”

Blake stared.

Chairwoman?

No.

Impossible.

Evelyn extended her hand.

“Arthur.”

Not Mr. Bennett.

Arthur.

As though they had known each other for years.

Bennett crouched briefly to greet Sophie.

“And Miss Sophie. You look beautiful.”

“Thank you,” Sophie said.

Blake's champagne glass trembled.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You said Evelyn didn't work.”

“She doesn't.”

“Then why did he call her—”

“I heard him.”

Daniel Mercer approached next.

Blake recognized him instantly.

Fairchild Capital's chief counsel.

The man had ignored six of Blake's requests for a private meeting.

Daniel kissed Evelyn lightly on the cheek.

“You made an entrance.”

“I wasn't trying to.”

Daniel glanced across the ballroom.

His eyes landed on Blake.

“I think you did.”

Blake felt cold.

Evelyn followed Daniel's gaze.

For the first time since entering, she looked directly at her husband.

There was no anger in her face.

That frightened him more than anger would have.

Vanessa released Blake's arm.

“What is happening?”

Blake walked forward.

“Evelyn.”

She stopped.

Sophie looked between her parents.

Blake lowered his voice.

“What are you doing here?”

Evelyn's eyebrows lifted slightly.

“Attending the gala.”

“How did you get in?”

Daniel's expression changed.

Evelyn remained calm.

“With an invitation.”

Blake glanced around.

People were watching.

“Can we speak privately?”

“In a moment.”

“Evelyn—”

Arthur Bennett returned to the stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen.”

The ballroom quieted.

“Tonight, the Atlantic Legacy Foundation has the privilege of recognizing the organization responsible for the largest private philanthropic commitment in our history.”

Applause began.

Blake barely heard it.

Arthur continued.

“For years, Fairchild Capital has operated with extraordinary discretion. Its chairwoman has avoided publicity and allowed the institution's work to speak for itself.”

Vanessa's face slowly lost its color.

Arthur smiled toward Evelyn.

“Tonight, however, she has agreed to let us finally thank her publicly.”

A spotlight moved across the ballroom.

It stopped on Evelyn.

Blake's heart slammed against his ribs.

“Please welcome the chairwoman of Fairchild Capital...”

Arthur paused.

“Ms. Evelyn Fairchild.”

The applause was thunderous.

Sophie looked up at her mother with enormous eyes.

“Mommy?”

Evelyn squeezed her hand.

“I'll explain later.”

She walked toward the stage.

Blake remained motionless.

Vanessa whispered, “Fairchild?”

He could not answer.

Because suddenly hundreds of moments from the last eight years were rearranging themselves inside his mind.

Evelyn refusing to discuss her inheritance.

Evelyn quietly telling him not to worry during his first liquidity crisis.

A mysterious investment arriving forty-eight hours later.

Evelyn warning him against one acquisition.

He had ignored her.

The deal had nearly destroyed him.

Then Fairchild Capital had refinanced the debt.

Coincidences.

He had called them coincidences.

Onstage, Evelyn accepted the microphone.

“Thank you, Arthur.”

Her voice was steady.

Blake had never heard her speak to a room like this.

“Fairchild Capital was built on a simple principle. Wealth has value only when responsibility accompanies it.”

The room became completely still.

“We invest in businesses. We invest in communities. But ultimately, we invest in people.”

Her eyes moved briefly toward Blake.

“And people reveal themselves most clearly when they believe nobody important is watching.”

Blake felt the sentence like a blade.

Vanessa stepped away from him.

After Evelyn's brief remarks, applause filled the ballroom again.

Blake pushed through the crowd.

Daniel intercepted him.

“Mr. Winslow.”

“I need to speak to my wife.”

Daniel's expression remained polite.

“Ms. Fairchild has obligations.”

“My wife.”

Daniel looked at him for a long moment.

“Those two descriptions may not carry equal weight tonight.”

Blake's jaw tightened.

“What exactly is that supposed to mean?”

Before Daniel could answer, Vanessa appeared.

“Blake.”

He turned.

She held her phone.

Her face was pale.

“What?”

“I searched Fairchild Capital's holdings.”

“And?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Winslow Development's largest institutional shareholder is Northstar Holdings.”

“I know.”

“Northstar is controlled by Fairchild.”

Blake stared at her.

Vanessa continued.

“And the Harbor Point properties... the leases, the financing vehicles... Blake, they're connected to Fairchild too.”

“No.”

“I checked.”

Blake grabbed the phone.

The corporate structure was complicated.

But the names were there.

Northstar.

Fairchild.

Mercer Fiduciary.

Blake's stomach turned.

He looked toward the stage.

Evelyn had stepped down and was walking toward Sophie.

She took her daughter's hand.

Then she approached Blake.

The crowd subtly opened around her.

Blake stared at the woman he had shared a bed with for eight years.

“Who are you?”

A flicker of pain crossed Evelyn's face.

“You had eight years to ask.”

He lowered his voice.

“You own Fairchild?”

“I control it.”

“You invested in my company?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

His face hardened.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Evelyn looked almost surprised.

“Would you have listened?”

“Don't do that.”

“Do what?”

“Turn this around on me.”

She stared at him.

“Blake, three hours ago you left me kneeling on the floor cleaning broken glass because you decided your mistress was more appropriate company.”

Several nearby guests heard him inhale sharply.

Vanessa's face burned.

“Evelyn,” Blake hissed.

“You wanted to meet the woman who controlled your future.”

She reached into her clutch.

She removed a black credential and placed it in his hand.

Blake looked down.

EVELYN FAIRCHILD — CHAIRWOMAN

When he raised his eyes, Evelyn was already turning away.

“Wait.”

She stopped.

“What's going to happen to my company?”

Evelyn looked over her shoulder.

“That's not the question you should be asking.”

“What question should I be asking?”

Her gaze shifted toward Daniel.

Daniel opened a slim folder.

Evelyn answered quietly.

May you like

“You should be asking what our auditors found this morning.”

And for the first time that night, Vanessa looked truly terrified.
