THE WOMAN BEHIND THE EMPIRE / Chapter 14 / 19

Chapter 14 - Starting Over

One year later, Winslow Development had a new name.

Harbor Community Development.

Employees owned nearly a third of it.

Blake worked there.

Not as CEO.

As project director.

His office was smaller than his old bathroom.

He loved it.

He spent Wednesdays coaching Sophie's soccer team.

He stopped appearing in business magazines.

He slept better.

Evelyn changed too.

She became publicly involved with Fairchild.

Not because she wanted fame, but because secrecy had cost her more than privacy had protected.

She launched a foundation supporting financial education and housing initiatives.

Sophie sometimes attended events.

At one fundraiser, mother and daughter wore matching pink dresses.

Photographers captured them holding hands.

The photograph spread online.

But what mattered to Evelyn happened after the cameras left.

Sophie looked up.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“You look happier.”

Evelyn smiled.

“I am.”

“Because Daddy's gone?”

“No.”

She crouched.

“Because I stopped hiding.”

Across the ballroom, Blake had arrived to collect Sophie.

He heard the answer.

And smiled.

Not because he believed Evelyn would return.

Because he was finally learning to love her without needing to possess her.

Then someone stepped beside Evelyn.

A man Sophie recognized.

Daniel Mercer.

“Dance?” he asked.

Evelyn laughed.

“With my lawyer?”

“Former lawyer for this particular disaster.”

Blake watched Evelyn accept Daniel's hand.

A strange ache moved through him.

But he did nothing.

He had learned that consequences were not punishments.

Sometimes they were simply doors closing because you had failed to value the room while you were inside it.
