THE WOMAN BEHIND THE EMPIRE / Chapter 5 / 19

Chapter 5 - Vanessa's Last Card

Vanessa sent the package at midnight.

Inside were copies of old trust documents, photographs, and a letter claiming Evelyn had secretly manipulated Blake's business for years.

Blake brought everything to Daniel.

He could have hidden it.

He did not.

That mattered.

Daniel examined the papers and found something unexpected.

Several were authentic.

Evelyn had indeed intervened repeatedly in Winslow Development.

But not to control Blake.

To save him.

During his first major project, Evelyn had personally guaranteed emergency financing.

During the recession, she had prevented Fairchild's board from liquidating his debt.

When one of Blake's partners attempted to defraud him, Evelyn had quietly funded the investigation that exposed it.

Blake read every document.

With every page, his shame deepened.

He remembered those years differently.

He remembered believing he was brilliant.

Lucky.

Untouchable.

He had never seen the invisible hand beneath him.

Meanwhile, police located Vanessa at a private marina.

She had attempted to leave Florida aboard a chartered yacht.

She was questioned, then released pending further investigation because the financial case was still developing.

Vanessa immediately contacted reporters.

By morning, headlines appeared.

MYSTERY BILLIONAIRE WIFE SECRETLY CONTROLLED HUSBAND'S COMPANY

FAIRCHILD MARRIAGE SCANDAL ROCKS MIAMI

LOVE, MONEY AND CORPORATE POWER

Evelyn hated every one.

Not because they threatened her reputation.

Because Sophie could someday read them.

Fairchild's public-relations team wanted Evelyn to attack.

She refused.

“We release facts,” she said. “Nothing about the affair.”

Daniel agreed.

“Even though Vanessa is using it?”

“Especially because she is.”

Evelyn would not turn her daughter's family into entertainment.

That afternoon, Blake called a press conference.

Evelyn learned about it from television.

He stood alone.

No lawyer beside him.

No prepared corporate backdrop.

“My wife did not manipulate my career,” Blake said.

Reporters shouted questions.

He continued.

“For years, I benefited from financial support I did not fully understand because I never bothered to understand the woman providing it.”

Evelyn stared at the screen.

Blake swallowed.

“I betrayed my marriage. I made decisions driven by arrogance and ambition. Those decisions are mine.”

A reporter shouted, “Did Mrs. Winslow destroy your company after discovering your affair?”

“No.”

Another question.

“Did she threaten you?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

Blake looked directly into the cameras.

“She discovered financial irregularities and ordered an investigation. She did exactly what a responsible chairwoman should have done.”

Evelyn lowered the remote.

Daniel stood beside her.

“I wasn't expecting that.”

“Neither was I.”

But Blake's confession created a new problem.

Vanessa panicked.

And frightened people made mistakes.

That evening, investigators recovered a cloud backup Vanessa had forgotten existed.

Inside was an audio recording.

Vanessa speaking with someone.

A man's voice.

They discussed Project Crown.

They discussed Blake.

Then the unidentified man said something that made Evelyn replay the recording three times.

“Once Winslow takes the fall, Fairchild will have to sell.”

Vanessa laughed.

“And Evelyn?”

“Her husband will destroy her credibility for us.”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“This was never just theft.”

“No.”

“Someone was targeting Fairchild.”

Daniel nodded.

“And Vanessa wasn't running it.”

Evelyn looked again at the audio file.

“Find the man.”

Daniel's expression darkened.

“We already have a possibility.”

He placed a photograph on her desk.

Evelyn stared at it.

For the first time since the gala, genuine fear entered her face.

May you like

Because she knew him.

And he had been sitting three tables away from Blake that night.
