Chapter 16 - The Return of Lenette

Lenette returned on Sophie's tenth birthday.

She stood outside Evelyn's house holding one small gift.

No diamonds.

No designer dress.

She looked older.

“May I see her?”

Evelyn studied her.

“Does Sophie want to see you?”

“I don't know.”

“Then we'll ask.”

That was the new rule.

Nobody used Sophie to repair adult mistakes.

Sophie agreed.

Lenette entered.

Their first conversation was awkward.

Then Sophie opened the gift.

Inside was the repaired crystal bowl.

The same bowl Lenette had broken years earlier.

A gold line ran through the repaired fracture.

“I kept it,” Lenette said.

Evelyn stared.

“I thought it was thrown away.”

“I took it.”

“Why?”

Lenette looked ashamed.

“Because that night became the moment I couldn't stop remembering.”

She turned to Sophie.

“I wasn't kind to your mother.”

Sophie looked at Evelyn.

Then back at Lenette.

“Why?”

Lenette swallowed.

“Because sometimes people make themselves feel important by making someone else feel small.”

Evelyn felt her throat tighten.

Lenette looked at her.

“I was wrong.”

There was no dramatic embrace.

No instant restoration.

But Evelyn invited her to stay for cake.

Sometimes healing did not look like forgetting.

Sometimes it looked like allowing someone to sit at the table again while remembering exactly why they had once been asked to leave.
