THE WOMAN BEHIND THE EMPIRE / Chapter 6 / 19

Chapter 6 - The Man at Table Twelve

His name was Richard Vale.

To the public, Richard was a respected investor.

To Evelyn, he was something else.

Her father's former partner.

Twenty years earlier, Richard had attempted to take control of Fairchild Capital during her father's illness.

He failed.

Then disappeared from the company's orbit.

Evelyn had not seen him in eleven years.

Until the gala.

“He knew who I was,” she whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“And Vanessa?”

“Financial records show she met Vale eighteen months ago.”

Before her affair with Blake began.

The realization was chilling.

Vanessa had not simply fallen in love with Evelyn's husband.

She had targeted him.

Blake arrived an hour later.

When Evelyn showed him the photograph, he sat down heavily.

“I've met him.”

“When?”

“Vanessa introduced us.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“What did he want?”

“To invest.”

“Did you accept?”

“Not directly.”

Blake hesitated.

“There was a bridge loan.”

Daniel swore under his breath.

“How much?”

“Twenty-five million.”

“Collateral?”

Blake looked at Evelyn.

“Harbor Point.”

Harbor Point was one of Fairchild's most strategically important developments.

Now the structure became clear.

Vale had used Vanessa to gain access to Blake.

Vanessa encouraged reckless expansion.

VRC siphoned money from Winslow Development.

As liquidity weakened, Vale offered financing.

Then Project Crown would create the final transfer.

Blake would take the blame.

Fairchild would lose leverage over the properties.

Vale would acquire them through default.

It was elegant.

And vicious.

Blake stared at the table.

“I brought him inside.”

“Yes,” Evelyn said.

“I nearly handed him your company.”

“Yes.”

He looked at her.

“Why aren't you screaming at me?”

“Would it change anything?”

“No.”

“Then help us fix it.”

For the next six hours, they worked together for the first time in years.

Not as husband and wife.

As two people confronting the consequences of choices—his reckless, hers secretive.

Blake gave Daniel access to every private message, every contract, every hidden account.

At 2:00 a.m., he found the key.

An email from Vanessa.

R says the wife will never understand the structure.

Blake stared at it.

“She knew I underestimated you.”

Evelyn answered quietly.

“She depended on it.”

The entire scheme depended on Blake believing Evelyn was irrelevant.

His contempt had become the weapon used against both of them.

At dawn, federal investigators arrived.

This time, they were not interested primarily in Blake.

They wanted Richard Vale.

But Vale was gone.

His private aircraft had left Miami six hours earlier.

Destination unknown.

Then Evelyn's phone rang.

Sophie’s nanny.

Evelyn answered.

Within seconds, the blood drained from her face.

“What?”

Blake stood.

“What happened?”

Evelyn grabbed her coat.

“Sophie's school says someone tried to pick her up.”

Blake went white.

“Who?”

May you like

Evelyn looked at him.

“A woman matching Vanessa's description.”
