THE WOMAN BEHIND THE EMPIRE / Chapter 9 / 19

Chapter 9 - The House That Was Never His

Blake moved out on a rainy Tuesday.

He packed two suitcases.

Eight years earlier, he had entered the mansion believing it represented everything he would become.

Now he knew it had never belonged to him.

Evelyn watched from the staircase.

Lenette arrived unexpectedly.

When she realized Blake was leaving, she turned on Evelyn.

“You got what you wanted.”

Blake interrupted.

“Mom.”

Lenette ignored him.

“You took his company, his home—”

“Stop.”

Blake's voice silenced the foyer.

Lenette stared at her son.

“She didn't take anything.”

“Blake—”

“I did this.”

Lenette's eyes filled.

“You're defending her?”

“No. I'm finally refusing to blame her.”

He picked up his suitcase.

“You treated Evelyn terribly because you thought she wasn't important.”

Lenette recoiled.

“I was protecting you.”

“From what? A wife who loved me?”

Evelyn looked away.

Blake continued.

“You taught me to measure people by status. I listened. That's my responsibility.”

Lenette left in tears.

Blake turned toward Evelyn.

“I'm sorry.”

“I know.”

It was not forgiveness.

But it was acknowledgement.

Sophie came running downstairs.

“Daddy!”

Blake crouched and hugged her.

“I'll see you Friday.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Evelyn watched him leave.

For the first time in years, the mansion felt quiet rather than lonely.

That night, she opened the drawer containing her wedding ring.

She did not put it on.

She closed the drawer.

Then she walked into Sophie's bedroom.

Her daughter was awake.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are we going to be okay?”

Evelyn climbed into bed beside her.

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

Evelyn kissed her forehead.

“Because being okay doesn't mean nothing bad happens.”

“What does it mean?”

“It means bad things don't get to decide who we become.”

Sophie considered that.

Then she smiled.

Evelyn turned off the light.

Tomorrow would bring another battle.

The Fairchild board had learned how much money Evelyn had secretly used over the years to support Blake.

And several directors wanted her removed.
