Chapter 11 - Back Into the Fire

Daniel didn’t understand why.

Sophie did.

The warehouse still existed.

The city planned to demolish it.

Before they did, Sophie needed to stand inside it once more.

She and Daniel entered together.

The burned walls remained black.

Sophie found the room.

“This is where he locked me.”

Daniel stood beside her.

She touched the door.

“For years I dreamed this door wouldn’t open.”

Daniel said nothing.

“I would wake up smelling smoke.”

She looked at him.

“And sometimes I hated you because you weren’t there.”

“I wish I had been.”

“I know.”

She stepped into the room.

Then back out.

Again.

In.

Out.

Finally she smiled through tears.

“It opens.”

Daniel understood.

The door was just a door now.

They walked outside holding hands.

Behind them, demolition crews waited.

Sophie nodded.

The machines began.

Brick fell.

Steel collapsed.

Dust rose.

The place that had controlled their lives disappeared piece by piece.

Noah watched from the car.

When his parents returned, he asked:

“Is the bad place gone?”

Sophie kissed his forehead.

“Yes.”

But rebuilding a family was harder than demolishing a warehouse.

And the next battle would happen inside their own home.
