Chapter 12 - Learning to Come Home

Sophie moved back into the house.
The first night, she couldn’t sleep in their bedroom.
Too many memories.
Daniel found her on the couch at 3 a.m.
“You okay?”
“No.”
He sat nearby.
Not touching.
“I don’t know who I am here anymore.”
“You don’t have to know tonight.”
She looked around.
“This house continued without me.”
“It tried.”
“You changed.”
“So did you.”
“What if we can’t go back?”
Daniel considered the question.
“Maybe we shouldn’t.”
Sophie frowned.
“We build something new.”
That became their rule.
No pretending.
No rushing.
No demanding that love erase trauma.
Sophie started therapy.
Daniel did too.
Noah attended family counseling.
Some days were good.
Others weren’t.
Sophie once panicked when Daniel accidentally locked the bathroom door.
Daniel once woke convinced her side of the bed was empty and searched the entire house before realizing she was downstairs making coffee.
They learned each other again.
Then spring arrived.
One morning Noah ran into their bedroom.
“Come outside!”
He dragged them to the backyard.
A row of tiny green shoots had appeared in Sophie’s abandoned garden.
She stared.
“I didn’t plant those.”
Daniel smiled.
“You did four years ago.”
Tulips.
Dormant bulbs had survived beneath the soil.
Sophie knelt.
She touched one tiny leaf.
Noah asked, “How did they come back?”
May you like
Sophie looked at Daniel.
“Some things wait until it’s safe.”
