Daniel shoved Sophie down.
A gunshot shattered the window.
Glass exploded across the floor.
Victor ran.
Daniel covered Sophie.
Outside, agents moved through the snow.
Alvarez had known about the meeting.
The recording had been bait.
Another shot.
Then silence.
Victor was captured near the tree line.
The shooter escaped.
Sophie was unharmed.
Daniel held her until she stopped shaking.
“You came back for me,” she whispered.
“Always.”
Victor’s confession cracked the case open.
He admitted financial crimes and obstruction.
He blamed Richard for the attempted murder.
Richard blamed Victor.
Both tried to save themselves.
Neither succeeded.
But the shooter remained unidentified.
Then investigators recovered security footage.
Sophie recognized him.
Dr. Leonard Hale.
The physician who had kept her confined.
Hale disappeared before police reached his home.
