Chapter 16 - The House With Yellow Doors

Daniel sold the old house.
Too many ghosts.
They bought a smaller place near a park.
Noah chose yellow for the front door.
“Why yellow?” Daniel asked.
“It looks happy.”
Nobody argued.
Sophie planted tulips.
Daniel built a bench beneath the maple tree.
On moving day, they opened the last box.
Inside was Sophie’s wedding dress.
She touched the fabric.
“I thought this burned.”
“I stored it at Mom’s.”
Sophie smiled.
“We never got a second honeymoon.”
“We barely got the first.”
Noah appeared.
“What’s a honeymoon?”
“Something you’ll understand when you’re thirty,” Daniel said.
Sophie laughed.
That night they sat on the floor eating pizza because their table hadn’t arrived.
Daniel raised his soda.
“To yellow doors.”
Noah raised his milk.
“To Mommy Coming Back.”
Sophie raised her glass.
“To staying.”
Daniel looked at her.
May you like
That word mattered most.
Staying.
