Chapter 14 - The Brother Behind Glass

Richard requested to see Daniel.

Daniel ignored three letters.

Then he went.

Prison glass separated them.

Richard looked older.

“You won,” Richard said.

“This wasn’t a game.”

“You got Sophie back.”

“No thanks to you.”

Richard stared down.

“I didn’t know she was alive after the fire.”

Daniel stiffened.

“What?”

“I ordered Cole to scare her. Dad changed the plan.”

“You said she wasn’t supposed to survive.”

“I was protecting Dad.”

“Why?”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Because that’s what I spent my whole life doing.”

Daniel felt no sympathy.

But he understood something.

Their father had damaged both sons differently.

Richard chose to become like him.

Daniel had chosen not to.

Richard leaned toward the glass.

“Do you hate me?”

Daniel thought carefully.

“No.”

Richard seemed surprised.

“I don’t want to carry you anymore.”

Daniel stood.

“That’s worse.”

“Maybe.”

Daniel walked away.

Richard called after him.

“Danny.”

He stopped.

“I’m sorry about Noah.”

Daniel didn’t turn around.

“Be sorry about Sophie. Be sorry about Rachel.”

Then he left.

Outside, Sophie waited.

“How was it?”

May you like

“Finished.”

And it was.
