Chapter 17 - What Noah Remembered

Children remember strange things.
Noah barely remembered Sophie before the fire.
But he remembered her perfume.
Her lullaby.
The nickname little bear.
And one afternoon, he remembered something else.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Uncle Richard came to our house before you went away.”
Sophie froze.
“When?”
“The night you disappeared.”
Daniel overheard.
“What did he say?”
Noah frowned.
“I was little.”
“You don’t have to remember.”
“He was mad.”
Sophie sat beside him.
“About what?”
“He said Daddy couldn’t know.”
Daniel and Sophie exchanged a look.
The case was closed, but this mattered emotionally.
Sophie asked gently:
“Did you see anything else?”
Noah shook his head.
Then:
“You hugged me.”
Sophie’s eyes filled.
“You told me you’d be back before breakfast.”
She covered her mouth.
That had been her last promise before the fire.
A promise she had believed she broke.
Noah climbed into her lap.
“You came back.”
“Three years late.”
“That’s okay.”
“No,” Sophie whispered. “It wasn’t.”
Noah considered this with the uncomplicated wisdom of a child.
“But you still came.”
Sophie held him.

Sometimes healing wasn’t about changing the past.
It was about allowing the past to stop deciding the future.
