Chapter 13 - Rachel’s Promise

Sophie created the Rachel Mercer Foundation.
Its purpose was simple: help people escape coercive confinement, identity fraud, and domestic exploitation.
Claire, still serving her sentence, wrote Sophie a letter.
Thank you for giving my sister her name back.
Sophie framed it privately.
She didn’t want publicity.
But Rachel’s mother attended the foundation opening.
She brought a photograph.
Rachel smiling in nursing scrubs.
“This belongs here.”
Sophie placed it near the entrance.
Noah looked at the photograph.
“Did she save Mommy?”
“Yes,” Daniel said.
“Was she brave?”
Sophie knelt beside him.
“Very.”
Noah thought.
“Then we should remember her.”
Sophie hugged him.
“We will.”
That evening Daniel took Sophie back to Miller’s Diner.
The same bench remained outside.
She stopped.
“This is where Noah found me.”
“I know.”
“I almost ran before you came outside.”
Daniel stared.
“What stopped you?”
She smiled.
“Blueberry muffins.”
He laughed.
“What?”
“I smelled them through the door. Noah loved blueberry muffins.”
Daniel shook his head.
“So muffins saved our marriage?”
“Apparently.”
They sat on the bench.
