Chapter 12 - The Check Mom Handed Me

After the wedding, Mom approached me.

She handed me an envelope.

Inside was a cashier's check.

A large one.

The repayment agreement wasn't finished, but she'd sold investments and accelerated it.

"I don't want this hanging between us anymore."

"Mom, Leonard said monthly payments were fine."

"I know."

She looked toward Trevor dancing with Caroline.

"I spent years telling myself I was helping everyone."

Then she looked back at me.

"But helping people with something that belongs to somebody else isn't generosity."

Dad could have said exactly that.

I hugged her.

Not because everything was fixed.

May you like

Because she finally understood what needed fixing.
