Chapter 15 - What Rachel Saw Before I Did

After everyone left, Rachel stayed behind.

"You realize something, right?"

"What?"

"You're happy."

I looked around.

Dirty glasses sat on the table.

Beach towels hung over chairs.

There was sand everywhere.

A year earlier, that sight would have filled me with resentment.

Now it didn't.

Because I'd chosen it.

Consent transformed work into generosity.

Choice transformed obligation into hospitality.

Rachel smiled.

"This is what you wanted the house to be."

She was right.

I had never wanted to keep my family away.
