Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Finally Knocked

Mom didn't visit for almost four months.

Then one October afternoon, my camera showed her standing at the gate.

She didn't touch the keypad.

She rang the bell.

"Allison?"

I answered through the speaker.

"Yes?"

"May I come in?"

Three words.

Simple words.

But she'd rarely used them.

May I?

I opened the gate.

She brought no luggage.

No relatives.

No expectations.

Only a pie.

We ate it on the deck.

For the first time in years, she asked about my work and actually listened to the answer.

It wasn't forgiveness.

Not yet.

May you like

But it was a beginning.
