Chapter 8 - The Vacation Photos That Never Happened

The failed beach trip became family legend.
But not in the way Mom expected.
Caroline's father had taken a photograph of eleven people standing beside luggage outside my locked gate.
Months later, Caroline showed it to me.
We both laughed.
Not cruelly.
At the absurdity.
Trevor didn't laugh.
"That's the worst photograph ever taken of me."
"It might be the most accurate."
He rolled his eyes.
Our relationship was improving.
Slowly.
He started paying back part of the money Mom had given him even though I hadn't demanded it.
Every month, a transfer arrived.
The memo always read:
Making it right.
Then one month the payment didn't come.
Instead, Trevor called.
His business was in trouble.
For years, I would have rescued him.
This time I listened.
Then I said, "What are you going to do?"
He was quiet.
Finally:
"Figure it out."
I smiled.
"Good."
May you like
And he did.
