Chapter 12 - The Call at 2:13 A.M.

Recovery wasn't a straight line.
At 2:13 one morning, the support residence called.
Mom had become confused and tried leaving.
She believed Dad was waiting outside.
I drove there.
Mom sat near the entrance wearing her coat.
“Your father hates waiting.”
I sat beside her.
“Dad died eight years ago.”
Her face went still.
Then grief hit her as though she were hearing it for the first time.
I held her while she cried.
That night taught me another cruel truth.
Sometimes loving someone with cognitive changes meant breaking their heart with reality.
May you like
And sometimes it meant entering their reality gently enough to bring them home.
