Chapter 9 - My Husband Finally Told Me the Truth

That night Daniel admitted something.
He had been afraid of Mom for months.
Not physically.
He was afraid of what her presence was doing to our marriage.
Every time he raised concerns, I defended her.
Every boundary became an argument.
“I started feeling like I was third in our marriage.”
That sentence devastated me.
I wanted to defend myself.
Instead, I listened.
Daniel wasn't asking me to abandon Mom.
He was asking me to stop making him the villain whenever he protected our home.
I apologized.
Not with excuses.
Not with “but she's my mother.”
Just:
“I'm sorry.”
Daniel nodded.
Then Noah appeared in the hallway holding his stuffed dinosaur.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah?”
“Can Grandma come back someday?”
Daniel looked at me.
I knelt beside Noah.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“When Grandma is ready and we're there to help.”
Noah considered that.
Then he said:
“I don't want the spicy bottle.”
I nearly cried.
“There will never be another spicy bottle.”
May you like
That became my promise.
