Chapter 16 - Daniel and Evelyn

Mom's hardest apology wasn't to me.

It was to Daniel.

He visited her alone.

I only learned what happened afterward.

Mom told him she had spent years seeing him as the man who took her daughter away.

Daniel told her:

“I never wanted to take Sarah away from you.”

Mom nodded.

“I know.”

Then she said:

“You protected my grandson when I couldn't.”

Daniel's eyes filled when he told me.

“She thanked me.”

I smiled through tears.

“What did you say?”

“I told her I'd do it again.”

Mom apparently laughed.

“I know you would.”

For the first time, they stopped being opponents.

They became two people who loved the same family.
