Chapter 17 - The Red Sweater

Nearly a year after the accident, Mom handed me a package.

Inside was my childhood red sweater.

The one she carried the night police found her at the bus stop.

“I want Noah to have this.”

I smiled.

“He won't fit into it.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

She touched the fabric.

“So you can tell him the story.”

“What story?”

“Not the kitchen.”

She shook her head.

“Tell him about the mother I was before I got sick.”

That nearly broke me.

I realized Mom feared being reduced to her worst moment.

The bowl.

The bottle.

The screaming.

But a human life was bigger than its worst afternoon.

So I promised.

I'd tell Noah about the woman who worked two jobs when I was little.

The woman who taught me to ride a bicycle.

The woman who sat beside my bed through every childhood fever.

And someday, when he was old enough, I'd also tell him about the kitchen.

Both stories were true.

Love required room for both.
