Chapter 5 - Five Minutes Before the Fall

Claire woke in her childhood bedroom.
Nothing had changed.
The same books lined the shelves.
The same pale-blue curtains framed the windows.
Even the photograph of her mother remained beside the bed.
For the first time in years, Claire felt safe.
Then she remembered why she was there.
Margaret arrived after breakfast carrying three folders.
Richard followed.
Claire looked at them.
“Tell me everything.”
Margaret sat opposite her.
“We found seven documents containing what appears to be your signature.”
Claire felt sick.
“I didn't sign corporate documents.”
“We know.”
“How?”
“Because two were executed while you were overseas.”
Claire stared at her.
Adrian had forged them.
“What do they do?”
Richard answered.
“They make you appear to approve transactions between Vale Meridian and several private entities.”
“Why me?”
“Because those entities were indirectly connected to trusts established in your married name.”
Claire's face drained.
“He used me.”
Margaret nodded.
“Possibly as insulation.”
Claire looked at her father.
“Can this hurt me legally?”
“We're addressing that.”
That wasn't the answer Claire wanted.
Richard leaned forward.
“Claire, listen to me. We document everything. We cooperate. We tell the truth. That's how you protect yourself.”
She nodded.
Margaret opened another folder.
“There is something else.”
A photograph appeared.
Vanessa.
She was leaving a building beside a man Claire didn't recognize.
“Who is he?”
“Elliot Crane,” Margaret said. “Former controller at Vale Meridian.”
“Former?”
“He disappeared from the company's public records eight months ago.”
Claire studied the picture.
“When was this taken?”
“Three weeks ago.”
Claire looked up.
“So Vanessa knows him.”
“Apparently.”
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Margaret motioned for Claire not to answer.
Then a voicemail appeared.
Claire played it on speaker.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
“Claire, I know you hate me. You should. But Adrian lied to both of us. If you want proof, meet me alone.”
The recording ended.
Richard immediately said:
“No.”
Claire stared at the phone.
Vanessa had humiliated her.
Helped destroy her marriage.
Smiled while Claire suffered.
There was no reason to trust her.
But there was one reason to listen.
Proof.
Claire looked at Margaret.
“Can we arrange it safely?”
Richard frowned.
“Claire.”
“I said safely.”
Her father studied her.
Something changed in his expression.
Perhaps he realized the daughter sitting before him was no longer the young woman who had run away to marry Adrian.
“Public location,” Margaret said. “Security nearby. Recorded.”
Richard sighed.
“One meeting.”
Claire nodded.
That afternoon, Vanessa sent an address.
A quiet restaurant.
And one sentence.
Come before Adrian realizes I copied everything.
