Chapter 9 - Vanessa’s Dangerous Secret

Vanessa had finally chosen a side.
Her own.
She sent copies of several ledger pages to Adrian as proof.
Margaret immediately recognized transactions connecting Vale Meridian executives to offshore accounts.
But something else appeared.
Payments to Elliot Crane.
Large ones.
Claire stared at the records.
“Why was he being paid after he left?”
Margaret shook her head.
“We don't know.”
Then Richard entered.
“We found him.”
“Elliot?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Boston.”
Claire looked at Vanessa's message.
“Does Vanessa know?”
“Probably.”
Within hours, attorneys contacted Elliot.
He agreed to cooperate.
His explanation was devastating.
Adrian had discovered accounting irregularities eighteen months earlier.
Instead of reporting them, he concealed them to protect the company's valuation during a major financing round.
Elliot had helped.
Then he tried to withdraw.
Adrian paid for his silence.
Vanessa became the intermediary.
Claire listened without interrupting.
When Elliot finished, she asked one question.
“Did Adrian know my signatures were forged?”
A long silence.
Then Elliot said:
“Yes.”
Claire closed her eyes.
There it was.
No ambiguity.
No excuse.
Adrian knew.
That evening, Vanessa called Claire directly.
“I want protection.”
Claire almost hung up.
“From whom?”
“Adrian.”
“Has he threatened you?”
“Not directly.”
“Then talk to your lawyer.”
“I don't have one I trust.”
Claire looked at Margaret.
Margaret shook her head.
Claire understood.
“I can't be your protection, Vanessa.”
“You're the only person he'll listen to.”
“He didn't listen to me when I was his wife.”
Vanessa became quiet.
Then she whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
Claire didn't respond.
“I know that doesn't fix anything.”
“No.”
“I watched him hurt you.”
Claire's grip tightened around the phone.
“Yes.”
“I could have stopped it.”
“Yes.”
“I didn't.”
“No.”
Vanessa began crying.
Claire listened.
Once, she might have rushed to comfort someone.
Not anymore.
Forgiveness did not require access.
“You need to tell the truth,” Claire said. “All of it.”
“What happens after that?”
“I don't know.”
“Will you forgive me?”
Claire looked out the window.
“Maybe someday.”
Vanessa inhaled shakily.
“But forgiveness won't make us friends.”
“I understand.”
“Good.”
Claire ended the call.
The following morning, Vanessa walked into Margaret's law office carrying the original ledger.
And when she opened it, everyone in the room discovered a name they had not expected.
Richard Beaumont.
Claire's father.
