Chapter 17 - The Truth Adrian Could No Longer Escape

Adrian rented a small apartment.

It had one bedroom.

No marble.

No staff.

No private driver.

For the first time in more than a decade, he lived without people depending on his approval.

It forced him to confront himself.

He entered a court-approved accountability program and began therapy.

Claire learned this through attorneys.

She didn't contact him.

His improvement, if it lasted, belonged to him.

It did not create an obligation for her.

Months later, they encountered each other unexpectedly at the courthouse after a hearing connected to the financial case.

Adrian stopped.

Claire did too.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

He looked older.

Not ruined.

Human.

“How are you?”

“Good.”

“I heard about the foundation.”

Claire nodded.

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

Silence.

Then Adrian said:

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

Claire studied him.

“Good.”

He smiled faintly.

“I deserved that.”

“No. That's not what I meant.”

He looked confused.

“Forgiveness isn't something you earn like a promotion. If I forgive you, it'll be because carrying anger no longer serves me.”

Adrian nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

“I'm trying.”

That was enough.

Claire started walking.

“Claire.”

She stopped.

“I really did love you.”

She looked back.

“I know.”

His eyes widened.

“And that's what took me longest to understand.”

“What?”

“That someone can love you and still hurt you. Love doesn't make the harm acceptable.”

Adrian's eyes filled.

Claire continued.

“I don't need to believe every moment was fake in order to know leaving was right.”

He lowered his head.

“Goodbye, Claire.”

“Goodbye, Adrian.”

She walked away.

This time he didn't call after her.

And this time she didn't look back.

May you like
