Chapter 15 - The Night His Empire Collapsed

Claire entered Beaumont Capital's headquarters through the main lobby for the first time in years.

Employees recognized her.

Some whispered.

She ignored them.

Richard waited upstairs.

“What did the board vote on?”

“A new foundation initiative.”

Claire frowned.

“You said they voted on me.”

“They want you to lead it.”

Claire stared at him.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“No?”

“I don't want a pity position because I'm your daughter.”

“Good.”

“Good?”

“That was the correct answer.”

Claire folded her arms.

Richard slid a proposal across the desk.

“They don't want you because you're my daughter.”

Claire read.

The foundation planned a national program providing emergency financial assistance, legal referrals, housing support, and employment training for people escaping domestic abuse.

Claire's throat tightened.

“They want someone who understands financial control from both sides of wealth.”

She looked at her father.

“You suggested me.”

“I suggested interviewing you.”

“Dad.”

“I am incapable of complete neutrality.”

Claire laughed.

At least he admitted it.

She read the proposal again.

For the first time since leaving Adrian, Claire saw a future that wasn't defined by what had happened to her.

“I'll interview.”

Richard nodded.

“No guarantees.”

“None.”

Claire got the job.

Not because Richard decided.

Because the independent committee did.

Months passed.

Vale Meridian survived under new management.

Adrian did not return.

His ownership was diluted during restructuring, and the company removed his name from its leadership materials.

The empire he had built continued without him.

Perhaps that was the cruelest consequence.

He had once believed he was indispensable.

He wasn't.

Neither was Claire.

And she found that strangely liberating.

People could lose positions.

Money.

Homes.

Marriages.

Reputations.

Life continued.

The question was what they built afterward.

For Claire, the answer was beginning to become clear.

But one unfinished task remained.

The mansion.

The house where everything ended.

And before the divorce could be finalized, Claire had to return there one final time.
