Chapter 13 - The Evidence Hidden for Three Years

Vanessa gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Elliot was at the hospital.

Adrian was not.

For the first time, the truth was no longer theoretical.

The child had a father.

And it wasn't Claire's husband.

Vanessa sent Claire one message.

He's healthy. Thank you for asking.

Claire replied:

Take care of him.

Nothing more.

Meanwhile, investigators continued examining Vale Meridian.

The evidence grew.

Claire's forged signatures became central because they demonstrated deliberate concealment.

But the strongest evidence came from something Adrian himself had forgotten.

A cloud backup.

Three years of internal correspondence.

Messages showed manipulation, secret payments, false disclosures, and repeated attempts to hide transactions.

Adrian's attorneys advised cooperation.

He eventually agreed.

The decision reduced the uncertainty surrounding the case, but it could not restore his company or marriage.

One afternoon, Claire visited Margaret.

“Is it almost over?”

“The divorce?”

“Everything.”

Margaret smiled sadly.

“Legal cases end. Experiences don't disappear on command.”

Claire understood.

She had started therapy.

She had started sleeping through most nights.

She had even returned to work.

Not at Beaumont Capital.

Not yet.

Instead, Claire joined a foundation her mother had created years earlier to support women rebuilding their financial independence after abusive relationships.

The first day, Claire sat anonymously in the back of a workshop.

A woman named Maya spoke about starting over with eighty dollars.

Another described hiding important documents at a friend's house.

Claire listened.

Their stories were different.

Yet she recognized the fear.

Afterward, Maya approached.

“First time?”

Claire smiled.

“Yes.”

“It gets easier.”

Claire looked at her.

“What does?”

“Believing the future belongs to you.”

Claire carried those words home.

That evening, Richard found her sitting beside the fireplace.

“You look like your mother.”

“You always say that.”

“Because you do.”

Claire smiled.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Why didn't Mom leave you when you became impossible?”

Richard laughed.

“She nearly did.”

Claire looked surprised.

“She told me success had turned me into someone she didn't recognize.”

“What did you do?”

“I listened.”

“That simple?”

“No. That difficult.”

Claire thought about Adrian.

He had never listened until consequences forced him to.

Perhaps that was the difference.

Richard sat beside her.

“Your mother taught me that love without respect becomes possession.”

Claire leaned her head against his shoulder.

For the first time, she didn't think about revenge.

She thought about tomorrow.

And tomorrow brought something she had not expected.

A handwritten letter from Adrian.
