Chapter 14 - Vanessa Turns Against Adrian

Claire almost threw the letter away.
Instead, she opened it.
There were no excuses.
No request for reconciliation.
Adrian wrote about the bookstore.
He admitted approaching her deliberately.
He admitted discovering her identity later.
He admitted forging documents.
And finally, he admitted what Claire had needed him to understand.
Nothing you did justified what I did to you.
Claire read that sentence twice.
Then she folded the letter.
She didn't forgive him.
Not yet.
Perhaps not ever.
But for the first time, Adrian had stopped blaming her.
That mattered.
Not for their marriage.
For the truth.
Vanessa's testimony strengthened the investigation.
She surrendered emails and financial records.
In return, her cooperation was considered when authorities evaluated her role.
Elliot cooperated too.
The network of lies unraveled quickly once everyone stopped protecting it.
Claire met Vanessa one final time months later.
Vanessa held her baby.
“He looks like Elliot,” Claire said.
Vanessa smiled.
“Unfortunately.”
Claire laughed despite herself.
The tension softened.
Vanessa became serious.
“I owe you an apology that doesn't ask for forgiveness.”
Claire listened.
“I hated you because I thought your life was perfect. Then I helped make it horrible.”
Claire looked at the sleeping child.
“You made choices.”
“I know.”
“So did Adrian.”
“I know.”
“And so did I.”
Vanessa frowned.
“What did you do?”
“I ignored things I shouldn't have ignored.”
“That isn't the same.”
“No. It isn't.”
Claire appreciated Vanessa saying it.
Vanessa looked down.
“I hope you're happy someday.”
Claire smiled.
“I already am becoming happy.”
They parted without hugging.
That was appropriate.
Some relationships did not need reconciliation.
They needed endings.
As Claire walked away, her phone rang.
Her father.
“You need to come to the office.”
“Why?”
“The board voted.”
“On what?”
Richard paused.
“On you.”
May you like
