Chapter 8 - The Empire Built on Her Silence

Vanessa hadn't disappeared.

She had run.

Security footage showed her leaving the mansion carrying two bags.

Margaret advised Claire to stay away.

Richard agreed.

Claire didn't.

Not entirely.

She refused to chase Vanessa, but she insisted on understanding what Adrian had built around her.

The answer was ugly.

For years, Adrian had used Claire's quietness as camouflage.

Her presence reassured investors.

Her hidden family connections opened doors.

Her reluctance to participate in business allowed him to put documents in front of her without questions.

He had mistaken trust for stupidity.

Now that trust had become evidence.

Three days after Claire left the mansion, Vale Meridian's board formally removed Adrian from executive control pending investigation.

He arrived at Beaumont House that evening.

Security stopped him at the gate.

Claire watched through an upstairs window.

Adrian stood in the rain.

No jacket.

No umbrella.

For nearly twenty minutes.

Finally Claire went downstairs.

Her father objected.

“I need to finish this part myself.”

Richard nodded reluctantly.

Claire met Adrian beneath the covered entrance.

He looked exhausted.

“You look well,” he said.

She almost laughed.

“I don't.”

“You look stronger.”

“That isn't the compliment you think it is.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“I made mistakes.”

“Mistakes?”

“I was angry.”

“Twenty times?”

His face tightened.

Claire continued.

“You forged my signature.”

“I was trying to save the company.”

“You used me.”

“I thought we were a team.”

“A team knows what game it's playing.”

He had no answer.

Rain hammered the driveway.

Finally Adrian said:

“Vanessa lied about the baby.”

Claire remained silent.

His eyes lifted.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

The pain on his face was real.

Claire felt something surprising.

Not pleasure.

Pity.

But pity was not love.

“I lost everything for her.”

“No, Adrian.”

Claire stepped closer.

“You lost everything because of yourself.”

He looked at her.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe.”

“I still do.”

“No.”

The certainty in Claire's voice startled them both.

“You loved how safe I made your life. You loved that I asked for nothing. You loved believing I couldn't leave.”

Adrian's eyes filled.

“Can we start again?”

Claire looked at the man she once planned to grow old beside.

For one dangerous second, she remembered their first apartment.

Cheap wine.

Burned pasta.

Dancing barefoot in the kitchen.

Then she remembered the belt.

“No.”

Adrian's face collapsed.

Claire turned toward the door.

“Claire.”

She stopped.

“Vanessa contacted me.”

Claire turned back.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“What did she say?”

Adrian stared at her.

“She wants ten million dollars for the ledger.”

May you like
