Chapter 16 - Claire Walks Back Into the Mansion

The house looked smaller.

Claire hadn't expected that.

For years, its marble entrance, towering windows, and expensive furniture had seemed enormous.

Now it was simply a building.

Margaret accompanied her.

Claire had returned to collect personal belongings before the property transfer.

She walked through the living room.

The cream armchair remained near the fireplace.

For a moment, she saw Vanessa sitting there again.

Then she blinked.

Empty chair.

Nothing more.

Claire climbed the stairs.

In the bedroom, her wedding ring remained where she had left it.

Adrian had never touched it.

She picked it up.

Margaret waited at the doorway.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

And she was.

Claire placed the ring in her bag.

Not because she wanted it.

Because she planned to melt it down and donate the value to the foundation.

Downstairs, she noticed something behind the sofa.

The black leather belt.

Claire froze.

Margaret saw it.

“We can leave.”

Claire shook her head.

She walked toward it.

Her heartbeat accelerated.

Her palms became damp.

For several seconds, she simply stared.

Then Claire picked it up.

It was ordinary.

Leather.

Metal buckle.

An object.

It had no power without the person holding it.

Claire placed it inside an evidence box her attorney had retained.

“I'm done.”

They walked outside.

At the gate, Claire looked back once.

She had entered that house years earlier believing marriage meant never leaving.

She understood differently now.

Sometimes leaving was the most faithful promise a person could make to herself.

Claire got into the car.

Margaret handed her an envelope.

“What is this?”

“Final decree.”

Claire opened it.

Her divorce was official.

She stared at her name.

Claire Beaumont.

Not Vale.

Beaumont.

She smiled.

“Congratulations,” Margaret said.

Claire looked through the window.

“No.”

Margaret raised an eyebrow.

Claire laughed softly.

“Happy beginning.”
