Chapter 12 - Adrian Finally Learned Who He Married

The divorce mediation began six weeks later.

Adrian looked thinner.

Claire looked different too.

The bruise had faded.

The fear had not vanished completely, but it no longer controlled the way she entered a room.

Adrian's attorney began discussing property.

Claire interrupted.

“I don't want the mansion.”

Adrian looked surprised.

“I don't want his cars, watches, art, or personal investments.”

Her attorney nodded.

“We are seeking only what legally belongs to Claire and compensation associated with the misuse of her identity and assets.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You really want nothing from me.”

Claire met his eyes.

“I wanted one thing from you.”

“What?”

“A marriage.”

Silence.

Adrian looked down.

The mediation continued.

Hours later, they reached provisional terms.

Before leaving, Adrian approached Claire.

Security remained nearby.

“I finally understand.”

Claire waited.

“You were never weak.”

“No.”

“I made you small in my head because it made me feel bigger.”

Claire hadn't expected that honesty.

“Probably.”

He looked toward the floor.

“I don't know who I am without the company.”

“That isn't my problem to solve anymore.”

“I know.”

For once, he didn't argue.

Claire left.

Outside, her father waited.

“How was it?”

“Finished.”

Richard opened the car door.

Claire smiled.

“Actually, Dad, I'd like to walk.”

He looked surprised.

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

Richard nodded.

Claire walked through downtown.

Nobody recognized her.

She liked that.

For years, anonymity had been something she used to escape her father's world.

Now it felt different.

Freedom was no longer hiding who she was.

Freedom was deciding who she wanted to become.

Her phone rang.

Margaret.

Claire answered.

“What happened?”

“Vanessa went into labor.”

Claire stopped.

“Is she okay?”

“We don't know yet.”

Despite everything, Claire whispered:

“Keep me updated.”

Because Claire had finally learned that protecting herself did not require becoming cruel.

And before the night ended, a newborn child would unexpectedly connect the lives of Claire, Vanessa, Elliot, and Adrian one final time.
