Chapter 8 - MRS. ADAMU'S TERRIBLE SECRET

The discovery shattered the household.
Mr. Adamu demanded answers.
Mrs. Adamu finally confessed.
Years earlier, when the family was struggling financially, Clara's father had helped them purchase the property.
Mr. Adamu believed the money was a loan later repaid.
It wasn't.
His wife had diverted funds meant for Clara and used them to settle debts.
"Why?" Mr. Adamu asked.
Mrs. Adamu cried.
"Because I was scared."
"Of poverty?"
"Of losing everything."
"And so you took everything from an orphan?"
The words silenced her.
Clara expected satisfaction.
Instead, she felt empty.
This woman had once braided her hair.
Bought birthday gifts.
Called her daughter.
Money hadn't created the cruelty.
Fear had.
Then fear had become resentment.
Every time Mrs. Adamu looked at Clara, she saw the evidence of what she'd done.
So she convinced herself Clara deserved punishment.
Clara finally understood.
But understanding wasn't forgiveness.
That night, Mrs. Adamu came to the boys' quarters.
For the first time, she knocked.
Clara opened the door.
"I want to explain."
"You've had years."
"I didn't hate you."
Clara almost laughed.
"You had a strange way of showing it."
Mrs. Adamu began crying.
"I hated what your presence reminded me of."
"That's not my burden."
Mrs. Adamu looked stunned.
Clara continued.
"I didn't steal your money. I didn't lie to Uncle. I didn't make you forge anything. And I didn't kill my parents."
Mrs. Adamu lowered her head.
"So stop punishing me for surviving them."
She walked inside and closed the door.
Mrs. Adamu remained outside.
The next morning, Clara packed her bag.
But when she reached the gate, Stella ran after her.
"Where are you going?"
"Somewhere I don't have to earn breakfast."
Stella hugged her.
Clara cried.
Then Mr. Adamu approached.
He couldn't meet her eyes.
"I failed your father."
Clara said nothing.
"I failed you."
Still nothing.
He held out an envelope.
"Your documents."
Clara took it.
"Thank you."
"Will you come back?"
Clara looked at the house.
"Someday."
Then she walked through the gate.
This time nobody chased her out.
She left because she chose to.
Across the street, a black SUV waited.
Ethan stood beside it.
But Clara didn't run into his arms.

There were still truths he owed her.
And before she could build a future with him, she needed to know whether he had been another person who loved her enough to lie.
