Chapter 13 - THE MAN IN THE BLACK SUV

Before Clara watched the video, Richard arrived.
He explained that he had been the man quietly ensuring parts of the trust remained protected.
His relationship with Clara's father had been complicated, but their friendship never fully disappeared.
"Why didn't you find me earlier?"
"I tried."
"Not hard enough."
Richard accepted the criticism.
He admitted adults had allowed pride to keep the families separated.
Clara was tired of inherited grudges.
She asked Richard only one question.
"Will you be a good grandfather?"
Richard smiled.
"If you'll let me."
Clara nodded.
Then they watched her father's recording.
Her father's face appeared on screen.
Clara immediately began crying.
"My Clara," he said, "if you're watching this, then I wasn't able to tell you these things myself."
He spoke about her mother.
Her childhood.
The trust.
His mistakes.
Then he said:
"Money can be recovered. Houses can be rebuilt. What I fear most is that bitterness will convince you love is weakness."
Clara covered her mouth.
"Don't let what adults did turn your heart into a prison."
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Clara whispered:
"I know what I have to do."
