Chapter 15 - MRS. ADAMU WASN'T READY FOR THE TRUTH

The legal accounting was completed.

Mrs. Adamu had misused a significant amount, but not everything Clara initially feared.

Some losses came from poor investments made before Clara's parents died.

The truth was messy.

It didn't fit neatly into villain and victim.

But responsibility remained.

At a family meeting, Mrs. Adamu admitted everything.

She apologized to her husband.

To Stella.

Finally, to Clara.

"I treated you cruelly because every time I saw you, I saw my own guilt."

Clara listened.

"You called me dirty."

"I know."

"You used my mother against me."

Mrs. Adamu cried.

"I know."

"You hit me when I was sick."

"I know."

Clara's voice remained steady.

"I can forgive you someday without pretending those things didn't happen."

Mrs. Adamu nodded.

"That's more than I deserve."

Clara looked at her.

"Forgiveness isn't about what you deserve. It's about what I refuse to carry."

The room became silent.

Mr. Adamu lowered his head.

Stella smiled through tears.

Clara had finally discovered the difference between forgiveness and permission.

She could release hatred without allowing anyone to mistreat her again.
