Chapter 17 - CLARA RETURNED THROUGH THE FRONT GATE

Seven months after the morning Clara had collapsed in the boys' quarters, she returned to the Adamu home.

The gate opened.

She stopped.

Memories rushed back.

Cold.

Hunger.

Humiliation.

The heavy travel bag.

Mrs. Adamu's voice.

Stella noticed Clara hesitate.

"You okay?"

Clara nodded.

Then she walked through.

Not toward the boys' quarters.

Toward the front door.

Mrs. Adamu was waiting.

She stepped aside.

"Welcome home, Clara."

Clara paused.

Home.

The word no longer had the same meaning.

But she entered.

They were celebrating Stella's birthday.

Clara brought a gift.

Mr. Adamu hugged her carefully.

Mrs. Adamu did not attempt to hug her.

She respected the boundary.

That mattered.

During dinner, Clara noticed something.

The boys' quarters had been renovated.

"What happened there?"

Mr. Adamu smiled.

"Come."

They walked outside.

The old room was now clean and bright.

Shelves lined the walls.

Boxes of food and supplies filled one corner.

A sign hung above the entrance:

CLARA'S ROOM — FAMILY SUPPORT PANTRY.

Clara stared.

Stella explained.

They had started collecting food, clothing and emergency supplies for young women in difficult situations.

Mrs. Adamu stood behind them.

"It doesn't undo what happened."

"No," Clara said.

"But maybe something good can grow where something bad happened."

May you like

Clara touched the sign.

For the first time, that room no longer frightened her.
