Chapter 10 - THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Daniel examined the signatures.
A handwriting specialist found inconsistencies.
Mr. Adamu's name had likely been forged.
The evidence increasingly pointed toward Mrs. Adamu acting alone.
But then Clara found something more personal than bank records.
A photograph.
It showed Clara as a toddler sitting between her parents.
Behind them stood Mr. and Mrs. Adamu, Richard Cole and Daniel.
Everyone was smiling.
On the back Clara's mother had written:
"Family isn't blood alone. It's who protects your child when you cannot."
Clara stared at the sentence for a long time.
How had these people gone from that photograph to this?
She realized greed wasn't the only villain.
Silence was.
Nobody confronted problems early.
Nobody told the truth.
Everybody protected appearances.
Eventually secrets became weapons.
Clara decided she would not continue that pattern with her child.
She called Ethan.
"No more secrets."
"Agreed."
"Even ugly ones."
"Especially ugly ones."
They met with both families.
For the first time, Clara publicly confirmed Ethan was the father.
Mrs. Adamu looked embarrassed.
Mr. Adamu looked relieved that Ethan hadn't abandoned her.
Richard offered to support the couple.
Clara refused financial dependence.
"I want access to what belongs to me. Nothing more."
Daniel smiled.
"Your father would have liked that answer."
The meeting ended peacefully.
Almost.
As Clara walked outside, Mrs. Adamu approached.
"I need to tell you one last thing."
Clara stopped.
"About your father."
"What?"
"The night before he went to the hospital, we argued."
Clara stared.
"He discovered the missing money. He said he would tell my husband."
"What did you do?"
"I begged him not to."
Clara waited.
Mrs. Adamu began sobbing.
"He walked away angry."
"And?"
"He collapsed later."
Clara's heart pounded.
"Are you saying you caused his death?"
"No."
"Then why hide this?"
"Because for years I wondered if the stress of our argument contributed."
Clara stepped backward.
Mrs. Adamu reached for her.
Clara pulled away.

That confession reopened every wound.
And the next morning, Clara vanished.
